Growing Together | Melissa B. Kruger
The subtitle of ‘Growing Together’ by Melissa Kruger is: Taking Mentoring Beyond Small Talk and Prayer Requests, and when I first saw that it really piqued my interest. Perhaps you, too, have longed for relationships with other Christian women that are able to get beyond the surface. I must admit, though, that the books contents were a little different than what I first expected!
Rather than a how-to book learning about mentoring or discipleship, this book is an actual tool to use in a mentoring relationship.
The first couple of chapters discuss the value of a mentoring relationship and what it might look like. The next nine chapters are then designed to be used as a sort of discipleship curriculum. They cover basic building blocks of the faithful Christian life including Bible reading, prayer, church and evangelism. She then covers things like temptations, contentment and discernment. Each chapter has things to do before you meet, during a meeting time and after a meeting.
This would be a valuable book to use to kick off a mentoring relationship, you could cover the nine topics and then move on to reading the Bible together. It’s a book that would be helpful to read on your own, but even more helpful to buy two copies of and invite a younger Christian to read with you.
